5 Inexpensive Resources To Learn Animation, Game Design And Comic Art

5 Inexpensive Resources To Learn Animation, Game Design And Comic Art

Animation, Computer Game Design and Comic Art are three of the most wonderful expressions of art that speak to the child in all of us. They can tell stories so simple or so rich and complex that they can engage an audience no matter how old or young.

With technology the way it is animation, game design and comic art education is accessible like never before. You don’t need to do a sixty thousand dollar arts course to be inspired and educated by the best in the world and make something of your own to share with the world.

If you are interested in any of these creative pursuits or would like to encourage someone you know who is interested here are a few mind-blowing resources to inspire and guide creation.

1. Instructional DVDs From Gnomon Workshop
These DVDs have been professionally put together by artists who work in the fields of traditional and computer generated art, and the range of subjects and tutors increases every year. You can learn all about animation, digital painting, storyboarding, game design, character modelling, conceptual art and more from noted contributors that will teach and inspire you to create.

2. Drawn To Life
This book is a compilation of class notes written by Walt Stanchfield and distributed to animators in training at Disney’s CALARTS college during a thirty year period. Hands down it is the most inspiring book on not only the technique of animation but an artistic approach to life.  Volume one is essential and leads into volume two which I would recommend if you can afford.

3. Imaginative Realism: How To Paint What Doesn’t Exist
James Gurney is most famous for his Dinotopia series of books. He has also been contributing to the world of art knowledge regularly on his Blog The Gurney Journey for some years now. This book is a compilation of the best of that Blog and also a few extras. It is a rich book filled with insight on the artistic process of creating worlds and characters that only exist in our minds and bringing them to life, based on the lessons of the masters.

4. Directing the Story: Professional Storytelling & Storyboarding Techniques for Live Action & Animation
Covers the process of putting a story together by a professional film-maker and highly regarded teacher.  A Comprehensive how-to textbook by one of the most highly regarded teachers in the field.

5 The Art Of… Books
Take your pick. For each major film in animation, Sci-Fi or fantasy there is generally a book released called “The Art Of… [insert film name]“. Each book generally is light on word sand heavy on images. The images are a balance of sketches, paintings and other artworks that the designers of the film created to help the words of the script come to life in images. They are invaluable insight in to the design process. And also once you buy one…they are highly addictive!

This is, of course, just a starting list. You also need life drawing resources and information on how to use the specific tools you choose to create with. But the inspiration and basic artistic background for animation, gaming and comic art all stem from writing and constructing a good story and being able to bring it to visual life with style and these resources will help inspire and guide you towards that goal.

Inger loves stories and loves to write. She has been writing words on paper for quite some time so when the Internet came along she started writing online too. You can see her latest website which helps people to manage their digital tv reception at http://www.digitaltvreception.org/http://www.digitaltvreception.org.

Day 33: My second tattoo

Day 33: My second tattoo

April 2nd, 2007: I skipped yesterday to play with international underwear week, but I thought I’d go back & take a shot of my 2nd of 5 tattoos.

I got Calvin & Hobbes here the year that Bill Watterson retired the strip. I grew up reading C&H, I had all the books and loved them to pieces, and when I heard that he was ending the comic, I knew that I wanted a piece of them to live on with me. I found one of my favorite strips, where Calving & Hobbes were playing Calvinball, and added a few personal touches… ;)

This was done in Jackson, Mississippi at A-1 Tattoos by Squench. That’s right, the guy who tattooed me was named "Squench". *laugh*

Where to get the best daily anime and manga news?

Where to get the best daily anime and manga news?

Are you a fan of anime? Manga? Would you like to get daily updates , specials and articles on your favorite series?

Surprisingly enough, there’s not that much blogs out there that actually dedicate to monitor what’s going on in the anime/manga industry, aside from main sites like ANN, MoonPhase, Anime News UK, etc.  Often these sites provide general news on very specific and unknown series, but what if you’re looking for Bleach news or Naruto news or ‘name your anime’ news? Then you’d have to scroll in the sea of unrelated information to get what you want.

Most anime and manga blogs these days feature all about the series’ episodes and soundtrack downloads, some posts with descriptions, banner and signature tutorials for forums, that get updated from time to time, but what if you want to get more than that?

There was a blog dedicated exclusively to Saint Seiya (Knights of the Zodiac) called Llusantronic. It was a Spanish site that featured the latest news and information on each character and the author Masami Kurumada in a wonderful way. It did get updated daily and I was really excited to check back on the site every day for updates.

But it wasn’t until the last Hades OVAS came out that the site stopped getting updated with relevant info, and only with manga downloads. And that also stopped eventually. I felt that it was frustrating since this blog was really THE only relevant Saint Seiya source on the internet. I’m sure you have felt the same way about your favorite series, in the sense that there’s not really a reliable site to go to get the latest filtered, personalized information and commentary.

With this in mind I created my own anime and manga blog, I mean, if you don’t find something that you really like, why not create it yourself on your own?

My blog is called ‘Daily anime and manga news – Your daily anime manga fix’. It features both English and Spanish content which is always a plus. And no, it’s not about episode or manga chapter downloads.

We have News, Curiosities, a Weekly Special Feature on certain things or situations going on in the otaku world, a Weekly review of any series, the AMV of the week section, and the Databook dedicated to that special anime/manga character we all know and love, in other words, pure and relevant information!

Not bad at all, huh? My blog is still relatively new, so I have yet to see if this ‘experiment’ goes well.

What do you think of my blog? Check it out!

Cool Games images

No Video Games For Him
games

Was wandering around the UAE market in Banani when I found this ‘tokai’ (street kid) wandering around as well.

It struck me that this kid will never get to play the video games displayed in the stores there. Nor will he ever get education or any other basic amenities for that matter.

So, here he is in front a store with all sorts of GBA, PSP, PS3 and Xbox 360 games that I grew up with.

Note: this was an impromptu shot. I know the composition is a bit ‘off’.

GEISHA LEARNING HOW TO DEAL WITH DRUNK and ABUSIVE CUSTOMERS
games

As two Geisha play harmonious music on their three-stringed sanshin, the other five take turns learning how to lasso and strangle a customer until he is rendered unconscious.

On average, each Geisha House had to subdue at least 3 customers a week using this technique. Even the strongest male could be subdued in this manner by several Geisha working together. Once the noose was slipped over his head and around his neck, that pretty much spelled the end of his trouble making.

Chronic "gropers" (and even worse) were usually taken down in 10 seconds or less, and a few remain hospitalized for at least a week. In a Geisha House, TESTOSTERONE was NOT a man’s best friend.

Just remember this one thing : KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF THE GEISHA
;-)

By the way, when they were not wrangling drunken idiots (where does Okinawa_Soba come up with these fictional explanations, anyway?), the Geisha REALLY used this rope to play a game called KONKON CHIKI. At least they USED to do this back in the 19th Century when this picture was taken by KIMBEI KUSAKABE. I’m hard pressed to find a link to such "Geisha Games" in today’s Japan.

HOWEVER, flickr member Noel43 did some digging, and found out what is really going on in the game of KONKON CHIKI, Here’s what he had to say (in his comment posted below) :

"…..Some time ago I looked for some information about konkonchiki. I didn’t find much but as far as I know one geisha is playing a specific song on shamisen while the other geisha (or client) prepares to grab the cup filled with sake. The cup must be snatched through the loose knot before the hand is caught. The punishment for failing the task was probably drinking sake, because this is what all zashiki are made for :) It used to be popular New Years game and it also had a non-alcohol version (kids used to play this game but they used a small bowl filled with water)……"

Ha ! That certainly explains the Geisha with her hand pulled back, ready to "strike" like a snake right through the loop. Amazing. THANKS, NOEL !
